The Cut
Of all the characteristics, cut quality is the most important aspect of a diamond that most heavily impacts a diamond’s beauty and value. Diamond cut is how well a diamond is cut and polished and specifically refers to the quality of a diamond’s angles, proportions, symmetrical facets, brilliance, fire, scintillation and finishing details. It doesn’t refer to the shape of the diamond, such as an Oval or Pear Shape.
These factors directly impact a diamond’s ability to reflect light, sparkle and provide brilliance, along with its overall aesthetic appeal. A diamond’s cut is graded on the scale of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. The Excellent grade signify proportions and angles cut for maximum brilliance and fire.

The Clarity
Is the third most important characteristic. Diamonds are created by exposure to extreme heat and pressure deep within the earth. This natural process means that all diamonds contain surface imperfections and internal inclusions.
A diamond’s clarity grade evaluates the visual appearance and how clean a diamond is, ranging from FL (Flawless) to I, indicating a number of inclusions. The fewer inclusions and blemishes the diamond has, the better the clarity grade. While the clarity can significantly impact a diamond’s value, imperfections typically can’t be recognized by the naked or unaided eye.
The Diamond Shape
From round to cushion cut, diamonds come in a variety of shapes. The most popular diamond shape is the round brilliant cut, which represents more than two thirds of all diamonds sold. Other popular shapes include the princess, cushion and emerald cuts. There are also several fancy diamond shapes, such as pear, heart and trillion-shaped diamonds.
Diamond shape and diamond cut are different terms. The shape of a diamond is indicative of the outline or external figure of the diamond. For example, pear shaped, round brilliant and cushion all refer to the actual shape and appearance of the diamond.
The cut of a diamond refers to the facets, symmetry, dimensions and reflective qualities of the diamond. A heart shaped diamond, for instance, may be cut shallow or deep, dull or brilliant. These factors don’t affect the shape of the diamond after all, it’s still heart-shaped but they do affect its cut.
