Gold Karat Values:

The karat value (K) of a gold item represents its purity, indicating the ratio of pure gold to alloy metals. For example, 24K gold is 100% pure, while 12K gold is 50% pure.

To calculate the purity percentage, divide the karat value by 24. You can also refer to the following table:

24K gold: 100% pure

18K gold: 75% pure

14K gold: 58.5% pure

10K gold: 41.7% pure

Calculating the Gold Content Value:

To determine the gold value content of a jewelry piece, you'll need three pieces of information:

  • Weight of the item
  • The karat value of the gold
  • Daily gold price

If the weight is measured in pennyweights, grains, or grams, here are some conversion factors:

20 pennyweights (dwt) equal 1 troy ounce

480 grains (gr) equal 1 troy ounce

Approximately 31 grams (gm) equal 1 troy ounce

To calculate the pure gold price, divide the daily gold price per troy ounce by the appropriate conversion factor, and then multiply it by the weight of the item.

Understanding Karats:

Karats, represented by the "K" or "KT" stamp on gold, indicate the gold content of a piece of jewelry. The higher the karat value, the more valuable the gold. For example, 14K gold is 58.5% pure gold, with the remaining percentage being other metals like copper or silver.

By knowing the karat value, you can determine the purity and value of the gold. For instance, if you have a 14K gold ring, dividing 14 by 24 gives you 0.585, meaning the gold is 58.5% pure.

Remembering these karat values and calculations will help you understand the purity and value of the gold you're working with.
