GOLD METAL GUIDE

GOLD METAL GUIDE

Gold is the most famous precious metal by far as well as one of the most appreciated. Gold is also unique for its durability (it doesn't rust or corrode), malleability, and ability to conduct both heat and electricity. It has some industrial applications in dentistry and electronics, but we know it principally as a base for jewelry and as a form of currency. The value of gold is determined by the market 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

When purchasing gold or jewelry, it's important to consider more than just the daily price of gold. You should also be aware of the gold's weight and karat. These factors will allow you to calculate the total value of the gold.

Gold Weight Measurements Simplified

When determining the weight of gold and metals used in alloying, jewelers commonly employ troy ounces. However, understanding the various terms and units of weight can sometimes pose a challenge for consumers, making it essential to grasp these measurements accurately.

Here are key weight measurements to keep in mind:

  • 1 troy pound equals 12 troy ounces
  • 1 troy ounce is equivalent to 20 pennyweights (dwt)
  • 1 pennyweight (dwt) corresponds to 24 grains (gr)
  • 15.43 grains (gr) equals 1 gram (gm)
  • 31.10 grams (gm) is equivalent to 1 troy ounce

Gold Karat Information:

The karat value (K) assigned to a piece of gold indicates its purity, specifically denoting the ratio of pure gold to alloy metals. To illustrate, 24K gold is entirely pure, while 12K gold consists of 50% pure gold.

To determine the purity percentage, divide the karat value by 24. For quick reference, consult the following karat values:

  • 24K gold: 100% pure
  • 18K gold: 75% pure
  • 14K gold: 58.5% pure
  • 10K gold: 41.7% pure

Gold Content Value Calculation:

Calculating the gold content value of a jewelry piece requires three key pieces of information:

  1. Weight of the item
  2. The karat value of the gold
  3. Daily gold price

For measurements in pennyweights (dwt), grains (gr), or grams (gm), utilize these conversion factors:

  • 20 pennyweights (dwt) = 1 troy ounce
  • 480 grains (gr) = 1 troy ounce
  • Approximately 31 grams (gm) = 1 troy ounce

To find the pure gold price, divide the daily gold price per troy ounce by the appropriate conversion factor and then multiply it by the weight of the item.

Understanding Karats:

Karats, identified by the "K" or "KT" stamp on gold, convey the gold content of a jewelry piece. A higher karat value signifies more valuable gold. For instance, 14K gold is 58.5% pure gold, with the remaining percentage comprising other metals like copper or silver.

By being aware of the karat value, you can gauge the purity and value of the gold. For example, a 14K gold ring translates to 0.585 when divided by 24, indicating that the gold is 58.5% pure.

Keeping these karat values and calculations in mind empowers you to comprehend the purity and value of the gold you're dealing with.
